First stop is on the summit of South Mountain, at the Washington Monument, the first monument dedicated to the memory of George Washington. erected to the "father of our country". A rugged stone tower was dedicated to the first president by the citizens of Boonsboro in 1827. Washington traveled through Western Maryland in his early years as a surveyor. The Appalachian Trail  winds through this park and passes the base of the monument.

 A short drive away is the famous War Correspondent’s Memorial Arch, a stone monument built as a tribute to army journalists and photographers. 

 

Explore historic downtown Boonsboro, MD, named for cousins of the famous Daniel Boone.  A must-do is a visit to Turn The Page Bookstore, owned by New York Times Bestselling author, Nora Roberts.  

 

Nearby is the Boonsborough Museum of History, which houses an extensive collection of historical objects spanning 5,000 years; displays of china, glassware, weapons, and ancient artifacts; reconstruction of cabinetmakers shop and 19th century general store. Civil War relics from area battlefields.
