Highways
Washington County possesses among the finest surface transportation grids of any U.S. geopolitical jurisdiction. U.S. Interstate 81 bisects the County to the north and south.  U.S. Interstate 70 does the same east and west.  U.S. Interstate 68 begins at the Town of Hancock, taking commercial and public traffic to Morgantown, WV U.S. Route 40 runs east and west through the City of Hagerstown, generally north of and parallel to 1-70.  Other prominent federal highways include U.S. Routes 11, Alternate 40, 340 and 522.
